ঢাকা শহরে নিজের জমি বলতে আশুলিয়ার এক টুকরো জমি আছে জনপ্রিয় অভিনেতা ও নির্মাতা ইলিয়াস কাঞ্চনের। নান্দনিক বাড়ি না বানিয়ে এই জমিতে হাসপাতাল বানানোর ঘোষণা দিয়েছেন ইলিয়াস কাঞ্চন। যেখানে সেবা দেওয়া হবে মানুষকে। এরই মধ্যে হাসপাতাল নির্মাণের প্রক্রিয়াও শুরু হয়ে গেছে বলে জানালেন তিনি।
ইলিয়াস কাঞ্চন বলেন,‘ আসুলিয়াতে হাসপাতাল করতে যাচ্ছি। আমার একটি মাত্র জমি, সেখানে আমি হাসপাতাল করবো। আমার যা আছে তাই দিয়েই হাসপাতালের কাজ শুরু হয়েছে। এর মধ্যেই ৬ তলার প্ল্যান পাশ হয়েছে। অনেক সহযোগীতা করেছেন ইঞ্জিনিয়ার স্বপন ভাই। আমি আমার স্বপ্ন পূরণ করে চলেছি। যতদিন বেঁচে থাকবো মানুষের সেবা করে যাবো। এটাই আমার স্বপ্ন ও কাজ।’’
এ বছর একুশে পদক পেয়েছেন চিত্র নায়ক ইলিয়াস কাঞ্চন। না, চলচ্চিত্রের মানুষ হিসেবে নয় সমাজসেবায় বিশেষ অবদানের এই পুরস্কার পেয়েছেন তিনি। ভাষা আন্দোলনে নিহত শহীদদের স্মৃতির প্রতি শ্রদ্ধা জানিয়ে বিশিষ্ট নাগরিকদের একুশে পদকে ভূষিত করা হয় প্রতিবছর। গত ২০ ফেব্রুয়ারি ওসমানী স্মৃতি মিলনায়তনে ইলিয়াস কাঞ্চনের হাতে তুলে দেন প্রধানমন্ত্রী শেখ হাসিনা।
১৯৯৩ সালের ২২ অক্টোবর। মর্মান্তিক সড়ক দুর্ঘটনায় ইলিয়াস কাঞ্চনের স্ত্রী জাহানারা কাঞ্চনের মৃত্যু হয়। প্রিয়তমা স্ত্রীর মৃত্যুতে তিনি ভেঙ্গে না পড়ে শোককে শক্তিতে পরিণত করেন। সড়ক দুর্ঘটনা রোধে জীবনের বাকি দিনগুলো কাজ করার প্রতিজ্ঞা করেন। আর কেউ যেন তাঁর মতো ভুক্তভোগী না হন সেজন্য প্রতিষ্ঠা করেন নিরাপদ সড়ক চাই (নিসচা) নামের একটি সংগঠন। দীর্ঘ দিন থেকেই ‘নিরাপদ সড়ক চাই’ আন্দোলন করে আসছেন ইলিয়াস কাঞ্চন। আর এই কাজই পর্দার নায়ককে বাস্তবের নায়ক বানিয়েছে।
